The hypothesis
Every era believed it understood the human being — and every era was describing its measuring instruments, not the mind. The traits we recognize today — intelligence, creativity, empathy, discipline — are not the fundamental building blocks of a person. They are the traits that happened to be visible to twentieth-century instruments.
This project starts from a different assumption: that beneath the waterline lies a continent of latent human capacities — dozens, perhaps thousands — for which our language has no words, our schools no lessons, our résumés no fields. And that artificial intelligence, for the first time in history, is an instrument sharp enough to map that continent. Not a machine that replaces the human, but the first lens through which humanity becomes legible to itself.
Psychology, on this view, is in its pre-Mendeleev phase: a catalogue without an ordering principle, unable to predict its own empty slots. The Undiscovered Human exists to name the field, state the hypothesis, and gather the people who want to test it — believers and skeptics alike.
First candidates
From the founding essay — not predictions, but demonstrations of how different unnamed capacities can be from everything in our current vocabulary. You will recognize them the moment they are named. None has a test, a word, or a place in any curriculum.
Sensing when a system — a market, a discipline, a conversation — is in phase transition and maximally sensitive to small interventions. Timing as perception, not luck.
Holding an idea in its unresolved, contradictory form for years without forcing it closed. Darwin carried his paradox for twenty. Not intelligence, not perseverance — a third thing.
Inducing an inner state in others — calm, conviction, urgency — independent of what is said. The unbundled mechanics of what we vaguely call charisma.
Continually rewriting one's past into a structure that carries the future. The measurable difference between resilience and a past that shifts like loose gravel.
Seeing what falls between the categories — the residue every classification leaks. Where most scientific revolutions began.
Before the first map
A complete map of the human would also be the perfect caste system, the perfect con, the perfect cage. The rules must therefore exist before the map — three clauses, non-negotiable:
The map belongs to the mapped. Your profile is yours — not your employer's, not your insurer's, not your government's.
No selection. Using mapped capacities for hiring, insurance, credit or admissions is banned outright, the way genetic discrimination was banned, and for the same reason.
Every classification expires. Each entry carries a revision date and a printed confession: this is provisional — the phrenology of tomorrow until proven otherwise.
